RE-THINKING

integrated energy strategies

What Do We Do?

We are a group of researchers who are working towards building a collaborative and inclusive environment to promote knowledge exchange, context-specific modeling toolkits, and modeling expertise to advance climate-compatible development within the established energy planning ecosystems of the African Union and European Union.

You can learn more about RE-INTEGRATE in the "About" section in the quick menu and in the short intro video below!

 Key achievements.

  1. RE-INTEGRATE co-organises a session on AU-EU energy systems modelling at ECEMP 2024, with OpenMod4Africa and EMERGE. Read more right here.
  2. RE-INTEGRATE contributes to COP 29 in Baku, Azerbaijan. Read more right here.
  3. Lecturers at Université Catholique de Bukavu create the first French version of widely-used open self-learning material on integrated resource modelling and financial modelling. Find the courses here and here.
  4. Trainers from RE-INTEGRATE teach at the Energy Modelling Platform Global (EMP-G), August 2024. Read more right here.
  5. RE-INTEGRATE and the Climate Compatible Growth Programme co-create and roll out a new international scheme for modelling and training proficiency badges. Read more right here
  6. Trainers from RE-INTEGRATE teach at the Energy Modelling Platform for Africa, May 2024. Read more right here.
  7. RE-INTEGRATE partners publish peer-reviewed research on energy modelling, including TU Delft’s work on modellers’ roles and responsibilities and TNO’s work on hydrogen and ammonia trade between Europe and MENA. Read more here and here.
  8. RE-INTEGRATE contributes to AU-EU energy systems modelling discussions at ECEMP 2024 and ECEMP 2025, together with OpenMod4Africa and EMERGE. Read more here.
  9. RE-INTEGRATE contributes to COP29 in Baku and COP30 in Belém, connecting the project’s work on climate-compatible energy planning with international climate-policy discussions. Read more here and here.
  10. RE-INTEGRATE prepares 10 accepted submissions for the International Energy Workshop 2026 in Cape Town, including 4 long abstracts and 6 full papers from AU and EU partners. Read more here.
  11. RE-INTEGRATE releases AETOS, an open AU-EU electricity and gas systems model for analysing long-term energy trade between the two continents. Access AETOS here.
  12. RE-INTEGRATE and the Climate Compatible Growth Programme roll out an international proficiency badge system, with 105 modelling and training badges awarded by the end of RP2. The badges help recognise skills in energy modelling and training, supporting a wider network of qualified modellers and trainers. Read more here.
  13. RE-INTEGRATE supports 10 Letters of Intent through the FlatPack curriculum initiative. These agreements help AU academic institutions develop higher-education curricula and teaching modules linked to energy and resource modelling. Read more here.
  14. RE-INTEGRATE makes 39 open records available through its Zenodo community, including datasets, reports, milestones, teaching material and technical notes. Visit Zenodo here.
  15. Lecturers at Université Catholique de Bukavu create French-language CLEWs and FinPlan teaching materials, including 17 lectures and hands-on exercises for OpenLearn. Find the courses here and here.
  16. ENIT produces new MS21 teaching material on energy systems modelling and OSeMOSYS, used in a 5-day PhD school and modelling workshop in Monastir. Access the material here.

Sister Projects and Partners.

RE-INTEGRATE also has sister projects and project partners. OpenMod Africa and Emerge Green Africa are our sister projects that work in close collaboration withthe work done at RE-INTEGRATE. We also have project partners such as AUDA-NEPAD, Climate Compatible Growth, LEAP-RE, and ONEPlanET. You can click on the logos below to learn more about them from their dedicated webpages.
The RE-INTEGRATE project has received funding from the European Union's Horizon Europe Research and Innovation Programme under grant agreement No 101118217.
